Updated. Did I miss anything?

This is really a shame that this highly anticipated box set is missing quite a bit of unreleased music from the "Temple of Doom" and "Last Crusade" scores. Add to it the fact that the "Crystal Skull" CD is nothing more than the same CD that was issued earlier this year.

Furthermore, it's an insult to the "Raiders" and John Williams fans to release the edited version of "Desert Chase" that was originally issued on the 1981 soundtrack, when we clearly have the full unedited version from the 1995 DCC release.

My only question at this point is, what were Laurent Bouzereau and company thinking? It seems nothing more than they just slapped this set together without any serious thought and care. Don't get me wrong, having unreleased music from "Temple of Doom" and "Last Crusade" is good, but there was so much opportunity for something more, that they missed the boat.

After the "Superman" Blue Box, I had been highly anticipating the "Indy" score set. Now I'm not so sure. I only wish that Mike Matessino and/or Nick Redman had been in charge of producing this set. They would have done it right. I'll just wait until I find a used copy through Amazon.

First of all: great work!!! Really appreciated!

There are actually two moments in "The LAst Crusade" that I think you missed:
1.The film version of the meetinng with Adolf H. (was a rearrangement of "Der Konigratzer"? Not sure...)
2.The film version ending of Keeping up with the Joneses (Film VErsion). There we hear the Raiders March motiv instead of the Indy/Henry theme. Right?

some instrumentation from escape from venice is missing that was used in the film and has never been released on any version of this cue.

just listening to the box set now. Its great, and the sound quality is superb, but I must admit it is frustrating not to have the 'full' scores...and whats the problem with putting the cues in the order they appeared in the movies? very frustrating. I have all the bootlegs so I guess with the help of the excellent listings on this website I'll just have to make my own versions of each films score... having an almost complete Temple soundtrack is great though!

great Work!

you know what the problem is with fanboys? no matter the fact that we have been asking for at least an expanded release of the first three Indy soundtracks and have finally got it, after 27-19 years later, the fanboys still have the nerve to complain about what's been left off. enjoy the release for what it is. it's a wonder concord even released it to such unappriciative people. I love the set and glad that i can finally listen to some of the cues without sound effects or bad quality after waiting all those years.

Anonymous said...

You know what the problem with fanboys is soundwave? That they are the ones who made these films successful in the first place and have made paramount/williams/lucas/spielberg a ton of money....

Theres no point in releasing a set that isn't the complete score. Should we be grateful for scraps or should we expect not be treated like second class consumers? You tell me.

Anonymous said...

I'll take second class consumer in exchange for the original, very much incomplete soundtracks we had for years. Enjoy the release for what it is. I've wanted a set like this as much as the next guy and, while a complete release for all of it would have been nice, I'm completely content.

Besides, put yourself in their position, business is business. We see the Indy films as treasures, Spielberg and Co. see the films as their artwork and job so it's a product and to always give everyone the whole complete product (.i.e. Complete scores on CD) right off the bat is, lets face it, not very good business because it limits the opportunity to revisit the products and make more money. Call it what you want- double dipping, milking it or whatever, but it's good business on the production side. The consumer doesn't have to buy it, though.

Anonymous said...

Of course they are holding back so they have something to release to market the product again later on. That's pretty much standard practice. Release an abbreviated soundtrack when the movie is released, then release an expanded edition on an anniversary date, then release complete scores through limited pressings i.e. Film Score Monthly. You better believe Lucasfilm will revisit them again, the question is do we have to wait another 25 years for them. Some of us will either be too old, hard of hearing, or dead. Why not just release them so we still have some years to enjoy them?

Anonymous said...

Remember, the Str Wars Anthology soundtracks came out in 1993 i think, which weren't complete but expanded from the original soundtracks, and then in 1997 all three soundtracks were rereleased and pretty much complete. so, it won't be another 25 years. I'd say until the next film comes out, whcih seems to be in the works.

Great, we have to sit through another crappy Indy sequel just so we can get complete versions of the scores and the canceled wave of Raiders figures from Hasbro. Thanks George.

Anonymous said...

You could add "A Tribute to Vernon." lol :)

Fair enough soundwave... I take your point. I suppose our/my experience of the films is very much linked to the way the music is used in the final cut, rather than the way it was recorded in the studio, so personally (and I accept not everyone will agree) I'd like the soundtracks released with the cues cut together and in the chronological order they appeared in the movies - but I suppose that may not actually be technically possible with the original tapes as they stand...

Jason LeBlanc said...

Moritz: yes, it's a timpani overdub that plays along with "Der Koniggratzer" in the film. And I missed the film version ending of "Keeping Up..." last time around, thanks for pointing it out!

Christopher Barry: All set!

airmanjerm: All set!

soundwave: I assume you're the same soundwave that PM'd me in the message board asking for copies of the unreleased music? A little hypocritical, don't you think?

Anonymous said...

Jason LeBlanc, yor assumption is correct. However, a PM is a personal message and I don't really appriciate you broadcasting what I asked you in private over these message boards. And, no, I really don't see that as hypocritical because I like the release because it has more music clean and in good quality then we've had for years, but that doesn't mean I want to edit all together for a complete release. Besides, if you look back a couple posts of mine, you'll see that I did say that it would have been nice to have a complete release.

Um, I just compared my DCC Well of the Souls (track 11, not 12) with the Concord Well of the Souls and they're precisely the same. What's this about the last 30 seconds of the DCC Well of the Souls having 30 seconds of music not on the Concord album? Is there a typo somewhere? Thanks for your help in advance.

Anonymous said...

If you were to look closely, Crippled Avenger, you would see that it lists the "DCC LP", not the CD. I hope that answers your question.

Finale and End Credits from "The Temple of Doom". So we all know about the missing 26 seconds right?
Sorry Jason, you missed out on the opening... I was relly annoyed when I played the 5th CD and found out that the orchestral murmer at the begining was not included! WHY???

Jason LeBlanc said...

Superman, I am not sure I know what you are referring to...

Anonymous said...

Here is what John Takis wrote back in 2001... In his complete score analysis, when analysing the last track Finale and End Credits, here is what he wrote, but remember, I'm only talking about the orchestral murmur at the start, that should have appeared on disc 5. Watch the movie again – I expected you to know.

Finale and End Credits (8:51) The film version of this cue differs significantly from the album version. It begins with an expectant orchestral murmur as the group watches and waits for Indy to appear. He does so, the last of the Sankara stones clutched in his hand. The film segues to the trio's return to the native village, as the music segues into a formal presentation of Indy?s theme. As the "B" section of the march begins, the crowd of freed children follows on their heels, rushing to joyous reunions with their families. The cheering crowd surrounds our heroes.

A warm refrain of the children's theme is woven in as Indy presents the shaman with the last Sankara stone. This is followed by a tender statement of the love theme, as Willie comments on his generosity: he could have kept the stone; gotten his fortune and glory. "It'd just end up collecting dust in some museum," Indy reasons (a wry reference to the ending of the first film.) Their short verbal interplay leads to a romantic kiss, and the main theme wells up to lead us into the end credits.

The credits begin with a presentation of the Raiders march which has Short Round's theme intermixed. Secondly, the music cuts to an arrangement of material from "Slave Children's Crusade" and "Short Round's Theme." This is followed by a formal presentation of the love theme, and the credits wrap up with a final reprise of the Raiders march. The album version of this sequence includes the same themes, but placed in a different order and arrangement.

Jason LeBlanc said...

The "orchestral murmur" you are talking about is on the set at the end of the track "The Broken Bridge / British Relief"

Anonymous said...

Thanks Jason, I actually popped the DVD in, and checked it out myself, the ‘Raiders Chords’ begin on 4:34 of ‘British Relief’. Well I’m certainly relieved! Still, a pity that we are missing the 26 seconds.

On the 4:34 mark of ‘British Relief’, you can here the chord that I think Williams actually intended to be synchronized with the March!

You could have mentioned that to me earlier though!

Thanks My Good Friend!

There is some extra unreleased music right after Indy and Willie fall into the car while they have an exchange with Short Round.

Also, what is that music playing while Marion is climbing from the snake room to the corpse room? Is that the beginning of the Escaping the Pit cue?

“Theres no point in releasing a set that isn't the complete score. Should we be grateful for scraps or should we expect not be treated like second class consumers?”

Strange statement. I missed the OST releases and have been desperately waiting for seven or eight years for an official re-release. I’d say what we have in stores right now is a MUCH better offer than illegal bootlegs or insanely priced used CDs at Ebay or Amazon-Marketplace. I’d have bought factory sealed original releases with much appreciation and without a complaint if only they’d been available!

Maybe I am stupid or not a real fan - but I am really grateful for the ‘scraps’ and feel rather first class each time I listen to those great (and for me) highly anticipated CDs.

I’d also like to say a big ‘thank you’ to the creators of this page. The information provided here – especially the soundtrack analysis and chronological order - made me appreciate the music even more.

Cheers,

GP

I have the game Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures.
I found the 3 tracks you make mention on the list for missing tracks of Temple of Doom :
- TD_BATTLEONTHEBRIDGE_E_QUI
- TD_PANKOTSECRETS_A_QUI
- MAP_TEMPLEOFDOOM

But when I want to read them with a player, they are not recognized as .OGG file and no sound is played, although they are named as .OGG. I tried many players, but nothing !
When I unzipped them with Winrar, 2 files constitute the OGG .file : an audio.cfg and a music.cfg

So, may you give me help to read and listen to those soundtracks? How could you open and listen to them?

Help would be really appreciated.
Thanks

I would very much like it if someone could provide links or files for the last few remaining 'Last Crusade' tracks I do not have. Obviously, someone here has the tracks, and could zip those bad boys up and email them over.

Thanks,

I love this article, thanks for posting it!

It is disappointing that music is still missing, but the Concord release did provide A LOT of key missing songs like "Uncovering The Ark" or "Father's Study".

Not to mention providing an awesome release for Temple of Doom (though incomplete). I had the difficult-to-obtain Japanese Import but for years even that wasn't available.

So I'm satisfied... for now...

Well, some cues are lost in the releases of the Score from Raiders to Crystal Skull... ESCAPING FROM THE TEMPLE with the Film Version composition but the most important from the four films is the Film Version of RETURN TO THE VILLAGE_RAIDERS MARCH (T. OF DOOM) (9:32 COMPLETE with the 30 Sec Insert and 8:42 FILM VERSION), with the missing 30 sec of Raiders in the beginning of the credits, the speed of the Final Kiss scene before the credits appears, the cut of some flutes and speed in some drums... Even with the several software of Vocal Remover it`s impossible to get...

Hector Herrera said...

Sorry for posting with the Anonymous option... The missing section extracted from the DVD is impossible, it generates a lot of Popups on the Missing flutes sections and drums... the Speed changes depending of the Language you hear the Credits, in the Remastered Spanish Ver. the drums have more sound but in the Spanish DVD normal release it contains a Speed change... I'm waiting for the day that FILM VERSION get released... Good night
